While this may sound like something mystical, the Diabetic Diet Food Pyramid is actually just an illustration to show the different food groups in a way everyone can understand. The Diabetic Diet Food Pyramid is divided into six groups of food. The top of the Diabetic Diet Food Pyramid is the smallest, showing you the food group you need to eat less of. The bottom of the Diabetic Diet Food Pyramid shows the food group you need to eat the most of, and is, therefore, the largest of the food groups. |
Starting at the top, you will see the group of Fats, Sweets and Alcohol. This is the group where you find most of your favorite foods from your pre-diabetic lifestyle.
They include snacks such as potato chips, cookies, cake, pie, crackers, fried foods or anything else that contains high sugar content or a lot of fat. It does not mean you can NEVER have anything from this part of the diabetic diet Food Pyramid. It simply means you can only have very small portions of one food in the group per day.
Moving down to the next group on the Diabetic Diet Food Pyramid, we find Meat and Meat Substitutes. Here you will find beef, chicken, fish, turkey, eggs, cheese, peanut butter, and dried beans.
It should okay to eat from this group as long as you choose lean meats, and cut away all the fat you can see. Also, it is suggested you go with smaller portion sizes. You need 4 - 6 ounces from this food group per day.
The next stop on the way down the diabetic diet Food Pyramid is the Milk group. This is something you need to work into your daily eating plan. Milk products have a lot of protein and calcium along with other vitamins your body needs. You are encouraged to pick 2 – 3 servings from this group per day.
The next group of food we look at is Fruit. The foods in this group offer you carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Your serving number per day from the Fruit group is 2 – 4.
It follows that the second largest food group in the diabetic diet Food Pyramid would be Vegetables. They are naturally low in fat and vegetables are a good choice to add to your meals as well as a satisfying snack. You are allowed at least 3 -5 servings a day of Vegetables when using the Diabetic Diet Food Pyramid.
The largest good group is Grains and Starches. This group in the Diabetic Diet Food Pyramid is the one that includes bread, beans, cereal, potatoes, peas and corn, along with pasta. This is where you get the lion’s share of your serving allowances. You may have 6-11 servings a day from this group.
